Protocol
Definition
Protocol is the set of formal and courtesy rules at an event: greetings, seating order, forms of address and the precedence of guests.
In practice
At a protocol event the hostess does more than escort: she maintains the order, who sits where, who greets whom first, when the guest of honour enters. This must be agreed with the organiser in advance; it cannot be improvised.
